September and October have been extremely special this year for the Wisconsin sports fan. The Badgers (Football) are ranked in the top 5, with very few pending threats on the schedule in the near future. The undefeated Packers look to be an NFL Juggernaut. And Oh yes, those Brewers!
The past few weeks I have spent a lot of time at Miller Park, witnessing some incredible baseball including Ryan Braun’s National League Central clinching home run, and Nyger Morgan’s walk off hit in Game 5 of the National League Division Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. This time is truly special.
With all of the well deserved hype surrounding our professional and college level sports, we would be remiss if we didn’t make mention of Lake Winnebago.
The fishing on Lake Winnebago this year may have been the best of many anglers lifetime. In a typical year, the walleyes become scarce once mid July arrives. The perch start biting typically in mid to late August, and continue the feedbag until first ice.
In 2011, The walleyes arrived late, but when they came, they partied late into the night. As a matter of fact, some are still dancing in the streets. This epic season seems to have no end, and the prospects for an excellent ice season are high. The perch have had average size, but huge numbers. This past week resulted in over 100 perch caught in less than two hours by myself. I hate to say but I broke sweat trying to keep up with the action.
White Bass are on a feeding binge right now, and it is nearly impossible to keep those beauties off of your line. I anticipate the next state record breaking white bass to come from this system.
The past several seasons on Lake Winnebago have resulted in heavy weed growth on the lake and some ideal spawning conditions in Spring. Those past weedy season allowed the growth and development of younger fish by providing cover and protection. This can especially be seen in the population explosion of large bluegills, which tended to be hard to come by in past years. Another example is the ample numbers of large and small mouth bass found along the rocky shore lines.
When discussions revolve around Wisconsin sports, do not hesitate to mention Lake Winnebago’s recent success in the same breath as the Wisconsin Badgers, Green Bay Packers, or Milwaukee Brewers. There is still time to find some quality fish this season. For current reports, be sure to surf over to www.myfishingpartner,com for the Winnebago System fishing reports. Keep up the good work Wisconsin!
